The city of Ajmer lies in the northwestern state of Rajasthan in India. In it, lies the shrine of Ajmer-e-Sharif, which is one of the holiest pilgrimage centre for the Muslims. Also known as Dargah Sharif, it is located at the base of a barren hill in Ajmer. It has the tomb of the Muslim saint, Hazrat Moinuddin Chishti, who founded the Chishti Sufi order.

Ajmer-Sharif People from all walks of life across the globe pay a visit to the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. After six days of prayer in seclusion, the Khwaja reached the heavenly abode. It is these six days, which are celebrated every year as the annual Urs. Thousands of pilgrims of any faith seek the blessings of the Sufi saint.


The shrine was built by Humayun. There is a huge silver gateway that leads to the Dargah, which was in turn built by the Nizam of Hyderabad. A major attraction inside the Dargah, is a beautiful mosque built in white marble, by Shah Jahan. The work and carvings on the mosque is absolutely fabulous.
In the 11th century, Ajayadeva, a local Rajput ruler found the city of Ajmer. At the end of the 12th century, Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti came from Persia and later came to be known as the saint in Ajmer. During the Mughal rule, Ajmer was the fulcrum for military campaigns against the local Rajput rulers.
The shrine is considered to be a place of wish fulfillment for those who pray with sincere and pure hearts. It is said that Emperor Akbar sought blessings for his son at the Dargah. In the Dargah, also lies the tomb of Bhishti, tomb of Saint's daughter-Bibi Hafiz Jama, tomb of Shah Jahan's daughter Chimni Begum.

Major Attractions of Ajmer Sharif :

  • Taragarh Fort : Also known as Star Fort it is a bird's eye view of Ajmer. In India, it is the 1st fort built on a hill. It was built by Ajaypal Chauhan in 1100 AD on top of a hill.
  • Shan Jahan's Mosque : Built in white marble, it lies in the corner of the inner court of the Dargah.
  • Nasiyan Jain Temple : Devoted to the first Jain Tirthankar Rishabhdeoji, this temple represents the Jain concept of The Universe.


In the 7th month of every year is the celebration of the Urs, death festival of Shaikh 'Umar al- Suhrawardi which is the main festival of Ajmer. Qawalis (traditional recital of Muslim devotional verses) are held in the holy shrine.

How to reach Ajmer :

Jaipur is 135 kms from Ajmer. Sanganer in Jaipur has the nearest railhead and also the airport to Ajmer. It is well connected to other cities of Rajasthan. Several buses and private taxis also ply on the roads.
